Music Alliance Pact October 2010

This month marks twenty three months of Counting The Beat contributions to an exciting international initiative, the Music Alliance Pact. On a monthly basis music bloggers from around the globe select a track from their own country which is then posted collectively and simultaneously on those blogs - giving each nation's track international exposure. There are now 35 countries participating. This month the MAP welcomes a new contributor for England - The Guardian Music Blog.

This month Counting The Beat is pleased to be contributing 'The Northwest States', by Secret Knives. The song is from Secret Knives first album, available for free download from A Low Hum along with an earlier EP.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
Secret Knives - The Northwest States
Secret Knives is the solo bedroom recording project of Ash Smith, who also plays in Over The Atlantic. The Northwest States begins with a pop melody and lyrics about lost love over programmed beats and a nice rumbling bass line. Then the layers of guitar start to build until the song soars into a shimmering shoegaze crescendo. The song is from Secret Knives' new album Affection, available for free download from here.

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie
Hamacas Al Rio - Sin Decir
Hamacas Al Rio is a six-piece acoustic pop band led by singer Laura Ciuffo. Sin Decir is one of our favorite tracks from their latest release, Al Final, El Parque, an amazing album dominated by hypnotic chamber music sounds and fine string arrangements, along with more conventional synthesizers and electric guitars.

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
Bleeding Knees Club - Bad Guys
Bleeding Knees Club only started in March and have already toured Australia's east coast a bunch of times, recorded an EP and secured a label and distribution. Admittedly, BKC trade in a certain brand of music that doesn't require/intentionally avoids precision, planning and cleanliness. Even though you can imagine these guys bashing out an EP within the amount of time it takes some bands to soundcheck, it still suggests potential radness in the near future.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Baiana System - Jah Jah Revolta
Baiana System is a new group from Bahia, a Brazilian state famous for its axé music - a style marked by lyrics full of ambiguous sexual overtones and simple dance rhythms. Their trump card is to raise the Bahian guitar to a new level, combining a typically Brazilian musical manifestation to elements of dub, contemporary electronic, rock and other genres, as observed in Jah Jah Revolta.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music
The Wilderness Of Manitoba - Sea Song
To fully appreciate The Wilderness Of Manitoba, you need to be in a calm, relaxed mood. So sit back. Clear your mind. Forget your worries for a moment. Ignore the phone, the internet, your pets, everything. Now start Sea Song and just let the gorgeous vocal harmonies and beautiful folky melodies wash over you. Wasn't that pleasant? Now go and get a copy of their first full-length, When You Left The Fire, because it has 12 more tracks just like that one.

CHILE: Super 45
Dadalú - Gracias
Dadalú's (Daniela Saldías) first steps in music were linked to the punk and hardcore scene. Later, she refined her ideas, got closer to hip-hop and took part in Colectivo Etéreo, Iris and Julia Rose. However, her solo work is strongly influenced by Phil Spector and Mark Ronson's orchestrated pop. Gracias, the first single from her forthcoming debut album Período, to be released by netlabels Ponk and Michita Rex, is the best proof that differences between punk, rap and pop are dwindling.

CHINA: Wooozy
Sun Ye - Strange Planet
With projects in rock, punk and post-rock bands under his belt, Shanghai-based Sun Ye is nowhere near finished with whatever he has planned for his music - fluid, dreamlike melodies that tinkle and slide smoothly in and out of your ears. His unpredictable yet continually enthralling tunes have landed him support slots for both Ólafur Arnalds and Émilie Simon this year. His latest album, Trash Can, was released on the Miniless label.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
The Malpractice - Boss Stallion
October 25 will see the release of The Malpractice aka Johannes Gammelby's (I Am Bones, Beta Satan) solo debut Tectonics on Crunchy Frog, an 11-song strong album of alternative rock aiming at minds, (pop) hearts and feet. Here's the great Boss Stallion and if you dig it, make sure to check out the other album single Oh, The Irony streaming on MySpace.

ENGLAND: The Guardian Music Blog
The Visitors - Hello Moon
Visitors frontman Karl Walsh used to head Factory Records folkies To Hell With Burgundy. The official bio says he has spent the time since the label's demise "writing novels in the French countryside". Hello Moon says different. It speaks of years spent orbiting Bowie's legacy, drifting on the dark side of the Duke before taking a quantum leap into Wayne Coyne's shoes. More years spent Waitin' For A Superman to spin earth backwards, to rewind to a time when we were still wide-eyed about space, glam rock and the power of a good, solid tune.

ESTONIA: Popop
Tallinn Daggers - Island Phi Ley
Tallinn Daggers is an electronic pop duo from Tallinn that consists of Ardo Kivi and Joosep Volk. Since they united in 2009 they have released one digital EP, The Last Escape, and a handful of singles. They are known for their very energetic live shows and listener-friendly habit of giving away their music.

FINLAND: Glue
Big Wave Riders - Big Sound
Formed just before the summer, Big Wave Riders aim to be the next big thing in Finnish indie music. While they ready their debut EP, we can enjoy a taste of their first recordings with Big Sound's fast tropical beat and early 80s garage vibe.

FRANCE: ZikNation
Hutchinson - Oh My Lover
Hutchinson is an electro-rock duo featuring Olivier Deniaud and Eric Tanguy, who make their music in the very creative city of Nantes. It's a hobby that doesn't stop them being rather good. You might have had a hard time guessing they were French.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
MIT - Pudong
German band of the moment is definitely MIT. With the advanced electronica of their second album Nanonotes, which was produced by Simian Mobile Disco member Jas Shaw, and especially with the video to Pudong, they have hit the spot in Germany's blogosphere. MIT may rightly be seen as a concept for taking Kraftwerk's legacy into the future.

GREECE: Mouxlaloulouda
go.quiet - Everyone I Ever Met
go.quiet is the project of Christina Kassesian and ?ousework. Everyone I Ever Met, the primary result of their collaboration, is soothing, compelling, heartbreaking, mysterious and gloomy. An enticing dip into melancholy that urges you to lean closer to the speakers to fully feel everything that is being played and sung. There's a beauty in the melody that conjures up a cinematic romanticism with the soft-spoken, whispered, gentle vocals to amplify this emotion.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
Captain Fufanu - Lava
Captain Fufanu are two youngsters and probably the brightest hope of the Icelandic electronic music scene. Hrafnkell Flóki Einarsson and Guðlaugur Halldór Einarsson (sons of a different Einar, so not brothers) aka Kaktus and Gulli played their first gig at the age of 16 in 2008. The duo mix dub, techno, house and experimental electronica. The song Lava is unreleased.

INDIA: Indiecision
Kaav - Daya
Kaav is an alt-prog trio from Kochi. The band's expansive, instrumental soundscapes are based in an understanding of local Carnatic music, with the trappings of a more alternative Oceansize - think a dosa-eating Explosions In The Sky. Daya is taken from a recently-released eponymous three-track EP, which we highly recommend you download here for free.

INDONESIA: Deathrockstar
Ghaust - Sleep And Release
With only two members, Ghaust, who hail from Jakarta, build an instrumental trip crossing through different genres, where post-rock/shoegaze influences and crushing sludge/doom tempo collide with hardcore punk and heavy rock. Sleep And Release explores a cumulative void, expressing emotions that can only be conveyed with music.

IRELAND: Nialler9
Sacred Animals - Chosen Seed
Sacred Animals is a solo project of Darragh Nolan. His debut release is the lush four-track EP Welcome Home and serves as a perfect introduction to his fanciful and feral, wild like nature ballads. The music recalls Radiohead, Bon Iver and Guillemots without ever really sounding too much like any of them.

ISRAEL: Metal Israel
ACE And The Deck - Mr. Grieves (Pixies cover)
ACE And The Deck take the Pixies' Mr. Grieves, stir it up with reggae, shake it up with psychobilly, throw in some surf punk and cut it with a generous helping of arak. Their debut album is a veritable musical arsenal taking the best from all genres, and hits the market on December 13.

ITALY: Polaroid
Havah - The Competition Dies
Michele Camorani was a member of La Quiete, one of the most important screamo hardcore bands of the past decade. This is his new solo project, and the sound is very different. Imagine a Blank Dogs song locked up in a dark basement all alone for 20 years - that's how obscure and cursed Havah's music can be. Sometimes, suddenly, pop melodies come to the surface, but soon they're buried into the noise once again. It's definitely worth downloading Havah's first album for free via his MySpace.

JAPAN: JPOP Lover
Hotel Mexico - Its Twinkle
Hotel Mexico are not from Mexico, but are a glo-fi and chill electro band hailing from Kyoto. Its Twinkle is taken from the recently released His Jewelled Letter Box EP and is full of radiant guitar melodies, ambient bells, airy synths and more reverb than any respectable song has the right to use.

MEXICO: Red Bull PanameriKa
Hello Seahorse! - Un Año Quebrado
Once a twee-pop band, Mexico City's Hello Seahorse! morphed into a gloomy sounding beast on their third album, Bestia. Now they've delved deeper into their tormented souls and came out with their fourth album in four years, Lejos. No Tan Lejos. Produced by the legendary Money Mark in Los Angeles and by local wizard Yamil Rezc, the 11 songs lay a rich forest of synths where Lo Blondo's banshee-like voice soars with operatic tropes. Say "Hola!" to this seamonster.

NETHERLANDS: Unfold Amsterdam
Space Siren - This Radar
Amsterdam quartet Space Siren have strong indie-rock pedigree behind them. Featuring members who previously made up the noisy, melancholic band Seesaw, who released a number of great albums on the reliable Transformed Dreams label early in the 2000s, Space Siren carry the torch on wonderfully. Thick layers of guitar distortion hark back to an era when Sonic Youth ruled the independent underground. The percussion drives every song. And, somehow, amidst the haze of overdrive, there's room for the strong, moody vocals of Gwendolien.

NORWAY: Eardrums
Dunderhonning - Støv
Dunderhonning is a young quartet from Harstad in the north of Norway. They have just released their debut full-length album on Guano Recordings, Sakte Ut Av Fokus, where they play warm, poetic, dreamy and powerful pop/rock. They sing in their native language and dialect, which suits the songs and their expression well. People who have heard and loved the music of Kråkesølv may find these two close to each other in style. Their album is high on my list of the best Norwegian albums this year. Highly recommended.

PERU: SoTB
LongPlayer - Chica A Go-Go
It's time to welcome the debut of LongPlayer, a powerful quartet that formed in Lima in 2009 and is led by experienced Pipe Villarán. Their first single, Chica A Go-Go, carries a pleasant melancholy and is full of crunchy guitars and surprise trumpet appearances. Their self-titled debut album, which comes out on October 21, promises to deliver a classic rock lesson and will undoubtedly be one of the best of the year.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
Noiserv - 06:00am - Mr. Carousel
Since his first presence in MAP a year ago, Noiserv (aka David Santos) has played internationally, recently in Scotland and Slovenia, and has shared the stage with Bill Callahan, Camera Obscura, Damon & Naomi, Perry Blake and The Swell among others. In July, he released a new EP, A Day In The Day Of The Days - a musical diary of one fictional day.

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise
Minus - Ha?deu
Minus is Daniel Stanciu, a young man from Bucharest who combines massive mountains of bass with glitchy, twinkling Game Boy melodies and a healthy dose of synth funk. The EP from which Ha?deu was taken can be listen to and downloaded on Minus' page at Local Records.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
Bear Bones - Oil & Lacquer
Islay-born singer Ben Harrison's thick brogue and some inspired bursts of accordion make eight-strong Bear Bones an unmistakably Scottish proposition and Oil & Lacquer a heavenly way to spend four minutes. Fans of Belle & Sebastian won't be disappointed. Since it's exactly two years since the Music Alliance Pact was launched, as a bonus you can also download a free anniversary compilation here which contains mostly exclusive and rare tracks contributed by 23 previous MAP artists from Scotland.

SINGAPORE: I'm Waking Up To...
Typewriter - Cry So Well (The Suntan Mix)
Ten years and three line-up changes later, Typewriter have finally released their labor of love, Indian Head Massage. Their debut album is chock full of well-crafted power-pop tunes and guitar riffs, whimsical lyrics and one of the most dynamic rhythm sections in the country. As a live four-piece, Typewriter shed all inhibitions to deliver a spine-tingling dose of forgotten melodies to awaken the senses, but on record they take the time to flesh out the minute details that make each song stand out.

SOUTH AFRICA: Musical Mover & Shaker!
Goldfish - Fort Knox
Hailing from Cape Town, Goldfish is made up of Dominic Peters and David Poole, who are one of the hottest jazz/electro duos this side of the equator. A mix of "funky riffs, acid jazz melodies and instantly catchy dance floor songs" is what they are about and Fort Knox is the epitome of their unique sound. This duo have made their mark in the dance scene and world domination is in sight.

SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK
Go-yo - The Blue Devil
Singer-songwriter Go-yo writes songs about cynical self-consolation. After debuting with a self-titled single offering lo-fi piano pieces last year, he has begun a venture into the realm of trip-hop and electronica with the recent release of first full-length album I Came Alone. While songs such as Let The Little Bird Fly maintains Go-yo's original, melancholic piano sound, The Blue Devil creates an atmosphere similar to that built by Air's score for The Virgin Suicides.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease
Mother Of The Forest - Bränna Broar
This suddenly prolific artist has just released another EP, this time with guests such as Mattias Alkberg and Magnus Ekelund. Vocals are processed and distant in the mix, adding to both the spookiness of the tracks and the prominence of the staccato electronic bursts that punctuate and enliven each song.

SWITZERLAND: 78s
The Legendary Lightness - Airplane
The Legendary Lightness is the side-project of the two drummers from Swiss indie outfits Schnitzer and Gabardine. The singer-songwriter duo hail from Zurich and has just released a splendid single called Airplane. It's an airy piece of music, providing you with the musical layer for daydreaming. Airplane will be featured on an EP which will be sold at concerts and is limited to 100 copies. Their debut album is scheduled for release this winter.

UNITED STATES: I Guess I'm Floating
Twin Shadow - Yellow Balloon
The description for this artist should be short and sweet: spin the track, buy the album and become very happy. Twin Shadow, the one-man project of Brooklynite George Lewis Jr, is full of smooth synths, dark vocals and compositions operating under the influence of 1980s music but not cheaply ripping it off like loads of chillwave acts. Simplicity and melody merge seamlessly in Yellow Balloon, like many of the tracks on debut LP Forget.

VENEZUELA: Barquisimento
Los Mentas - El Kiosko
Los Mentas is a rockabilly band with a new and nostalgic proposal and a strong dose of punk-rock flavor. Other influences like tango and swing can also be found in their work. Richard "Chicha" Blanco, Carlos Aray, Hector "Lukas" Paredes and Juan Olmedillo are Los Mentas, and El Kiosko is included on their debut album.

Roger Shepherd from Flying Nun

A little while ago I got the chance to have a chat with Roger Shepherd, founder and owner of New Zealand's iconic Flying Nun record label. Having formed the label in 1982 Shepherd was at the helm until he sold it 1999. In the new century Flying Nun lost it's spirit and direction as it shifted through a range of corporate owners but in late 2009 Shepherd bought back the label and has embarked on a mission to not only release a wealth of long lost gems from the vaults but also to sign and release new material.

The first releases on Flying Nun since Shepherd took over again, Grayson Gilmour's No Constellation and Die! Die! Die!'s Form. The third release, just out is a new solo album from Robert Scott of the The Bats and The Clean, Ends Run Together.

I also spoke with Shepherd about his plans for re-releasing Flying Nun's back catalogue. While even well known acts like The Bats have classic material that is unreleased there is a wealth EPs from lesser-known acts. While some of this material, like the two 1983 EPs by Marie and The Atom, has a fairly niche audience it would be good to have it available in some form.

There are also a number of Dunedin bands who released material that was significant in the development of New Zealand music throughout the eighties and beyond which at present can't be heard.

After I turned off the recorder Roger and I kept on chatting and we discussed the possibility of previously unreleased material emerging. In a Counting The Beat exclusive this podcast includes a song from the 3Ds David Mitchell, recorded in the lead up to their Fying Nun EP Swarthy Songs for Swabs - a portastudio recording called Some Thing.

There are videos from Robert Scott, Die! Die! Die! and Grayson Gilmour on the video page.

Silver Scroll Awards 2010

The APRA Silver Scrolls are New Zealand's annual songwriting awards. APRA is an organisation of songwriters and each year it's members nominate and vote on the songs that they believe to be the best songs of the year. The ceremony itself is an annual highlight. Each of the nominated songs is performed by another musical act, leading to some unique and surprising interpretations.

This year the five finalists were:

  • Anika Moa - Running Through The Fire (Storm)
  • Julia Deans - New Dialogue
  • The Mint Chicks - Say Goodbye
  • Artisan Guns - Autumn
  • The Naked and Famous - Young Blood

Counting The Beat was at the awards ceremony to talk to the finalists and, being a bit of a fan of a good cover version, to check out the performances.

Music Alliance Pact September 2010

This month marks twenty two months of Counting The Beat contributions to an exciting international initiative, the Music Alliance Pact. On a monthly basis music bloggers from around the globe select a track from their own country which is then posted collectively and simultaneously on those blogs - giving each nation's track international exposure. There are now 35 countries participating and interest is growing. This month Counting The Beat is pleased to be contributing 'Fifteen Golden Balls Pt. 2', by Sharpie Crows. The band has two EPs, Mass Grave and Golf Course, available on their bandcamp page form just $5 a piece. There's also clips for a couple of the band's earlier tracks on the video page.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
Sharpie Crows - Fifteen Golden Balls Pt.2
Thumping drums provide the foundation for this fantastic song that starts with the drums, vocals and keyboard before going instrumental, adding post-punk guitar chords and then, remarkably, at around the two-thirds mark, brass (or at least brass samples). The song is so well constructed I keep coming back to it to just listen to how they put it together. Sharpie Crows, from Wellington but currently living in Australia, have two EPs available on their Bandcamp.

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie
Mompox - Feel Alright
This is one of our favorite tracks from Mompox's debut album, Mompox & The Big Umbrella. The recording process took almost two years and if you listen to the album it's easy to understand why - it contains 16 songs with more than 30 musicians playing all kinds of instruments. The sound is a mixture of American pop from the 50s, with a bit of psychedelic rock and experimental sounds. It's a very eclectic record, so start with Feel Alright and then visit their MySpace for more songs if you like them.

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
Fishing - OOOO
For a pair of low-key beat-makers from Sydney, Fishing have seen an impressive ascent from small Tumblrs through to Pitchfork's Playlist with barely an official release behind them. Without wanting to reduce them to a fad, Fishing capitalise on the chillwave trend and infuse their summery vibe with an heavy dose of limping glitch-hop. Heard it before? You may have heard something similar, but Fishing really do have the skills that leave the other bros with their blunts and laptops in the dust.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Neon Night Riders - South Travelling
Echoes from bands such as M83, Arab Strap and The Jesus And Mary Chain can be felt in South Travelling by duo Neon Night Riders. The song infuses the synthpop, Britpop and shoegaze influences that are the hallmark of their work. Their first full-length, The Neon Album, is available to download at the band's Last.fm page.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music
The Love Machine - Be A Path
Once upon a time (that is, their first two EPs), The Love Machine were a fairly generic emo-pop band, albeit one that knew how to bring it live. With the release of their first full-length, Sweater Weather, however, TLM have transformed. They're still a great live band but, for the first time, they're equally great on record. This song captures that growth as well as anything. It's dark, heavy and, best of all, impossible to forget.

CHILE: Super 45
Denver - Lo Que Quieras
With straightforward pop their main goal, the songs of Denver - comprising Mariana Montenegro and Milton Mahan - evoke the sound of bands such as Abba, Electric Light Orchestra and those from the golden years of Motown Records. Their new single, Lo Que Quieras ("What You Want"), is one of the finest songs of the year. It is full of youthful promises and an epic mixture of string arrangements and sweet choirs.

CHINA: Wooozy
The Fallacy - As I Leave
Up-and-coming post-punk rockers The Fallacy have a unique blend of grungy badassness, noise and harmony that puts them right at the crest of China's post-punk wave, in which PK-14 and Re-tros have already gained a serious fanbase, both local and worldwide. Formed just two years ago in Xinjiang, Henan Province, their songs have a distinctly quelled energy brewing under a thin quilt of funk, punk, nefarious riffs and crooning vocals that are sure to secure many fans from all sorts of musical preferences.

COLOMBIA: Colombia Urbana
Profetas - Baila
Profetas is duo Antombo and Pablo, and new single Baila is a good representation of their fusion sound, which takes in some elements of indie-pop.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
Plok - Kleenex Exposition
Following three EPs, Danish math-rock (or, as they call it, mathbeat synthpunk) quartet Plok finally have a full-length debut out titled Sing Us Yr Guillotine Gospel. Through 12 mind-bending trips to places at least one step beyond, they stick it to the Man and the numbed masses. Exclusively for the Music Alliance Pact here's the awesome Kleenex Exposition.

ESTONIA: Popop
Iiris - Astronaut
Iiris is a young singer-songwriter with ambitious dreams. At the moment she is crafting her debut album with mad scientist, producer and co-writer Sethh. Aspiring to create something special, they have ventured into a secret dimension where pop, rock, innovation, synthesizers, classical piano, electronic soundscapes, catchy melodies, random madness, senseless beauty, zombies, cats and unicorns all become one.

FINLAND: Glue
Hi-Horse - 7th Street Ninjas
The sound of Hi-Horse is mostly based on the modern blues guitar of Jani Kamppi, but the band opens up its sound to the most surprising, and danceable, arrangements and textures. Their soon-to-be-released album, Concrete Clouds, is full of imaginative guitar-based pop tunes.

FRANCE: ZikNation
Smooth - Music
When listening to Smooth's music you get the strange impression of finding an old friend, a road companion, because their music draws on our own imagination where it moulds itself, each day, each rainy season, with pleasure or ecstasy. The trio borrows and mixes sounds and rhythms from their forefathers, displayed and put back together with inventiveness, jubilation and sensuality.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
Tuo - Walk With Me
It's quite uncommon to see two 16-year-old girls making folk music as relaxed as Tuo do. Tasmin and Oda create soundscapes with soft voices and two acoustic guitars which make you feel like walking barefoot on mossy ground. Walk With Me is a MAP exclusive from their debut album Walk On Silence, recently released on aspiring FlowerStreet Records.

GREECE: Mouxlaloulouda
Chris Nemmo - Half Human (feat. Etten)
After experimenting with different electronic dance genres and releasing material in several record labels worldwide, Chris Nemmo has just brought out his sophomore album, The Nautilus Project. It consists of several different aspects of the scene, employing dirty funky basslines, vintage melodies and atmospheric vocals in an effort to simulate a warm analog perception of the disco groove and aesthetics. This is Etten's second collaboration with Chris and she again provides a unique touch. Much of Half Human's seductive allure is owed to her lyrics and passionate vocal performance, which is as technically stunning as it is expressive.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
Barujarn - Skuggasorf
The band Barujarn, Icelandic for "corrugated iron", started in the fall of 2008. They play gloomy surf garage rock flavoured with metal or disco. The band members are Oddur on bass, Sindri on guitar, Leifur on drums, and Hekla on theremin. Barujarn has recorded an EP that features the song Skuggasorf and will record a full album soon.

INDIA: Indiecision
Rosemary - Golden Trees
Rosemary is a three-piece post-grunge band from Mumbai. This young act has been making waves in the Indian indie scene over the past couple of years on the back of some major competition victories and regular gigging. Golden Trees is the product of post-Nirvana youthful exuberance. Distortion heavy and moshpit ready, this four-and-a-half minute track is an ode to Seattle '90s. Listen loud.

INDONESIA: Deathrockstar
Komunal - Pasukan Perang Dari Rawa
Pasukan Perang Dari Rawa means "combat troops from the swamp". With heavy distortion, pre-historic barbaric drums stomping, deadly bass, deep vocals and a good attitude they're currently my favorite stoner band.

IRELAND: Nialler9
Groom - A Music Lesson
Groom's finest hour (well 50 minutes) arrived this month in the form of their third album Marriage. It's a slightly sardonic examination of relationships and life set to an earnest indie-pop backing. It's lovely stuff and only five euros from their Bandcamp site where you can also stream it. Go pop!

ISRAEL: Metal Israel
GodWrath - Heart vs. Mind
Vocalists using scream techniques are a dime a dozen but Godwrath boasts a female screamer with more cojones than most of the guys out there, topping their aggressive metal groove with a hardcore edge.

ITALY: Polaroid
A Classic Education - Gone To Sea
A Classic Education recently described their sound as "night music for lazy afternoons", but I think there's more to it than that. Dreamy and strong at the same time, vibrant and uplifting, Gone To Sea is a lush pop gem, a perfect example of their amazing songwriting skills. It's taken from their new Hey There Stranger EP, out this month on US label Lefse Records (Neon Indian, Dominant Legs).

JAPAN: JPOP Lover
World's End Girlfriend - Les Enfants du Paradis
World's End Girlfriend is the orchestral post-rock and experimental electronica project of Katsuhiko Maeda. He has just launched his own label, Virgin Babylon Records, and released an irregular pop album, Seven Idiots, on September 14.

MEXICO: Red Bull PanameriKa
Chikita Violenta - Roni
This is the story of a Mexican band flirting with a Canadian sound. On their second album The Stars And Suns Sessions (2007), the four-piece settled for some months in a studio on the countryside outside Toronto to make a record guided by Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene). For their third album TRE3S (2010), Chikita Violenta went back to Ontario to explore deeper into that particular sound reigning on the Arts & Crafts label: a maple leaf wall of sound vined with many layers of guitars, bittersweet-abstract choirs and a happy-go-lucky vibe.

NETHERLANDS: Unfold Amsterdam
Apneu - Daydream
Apneu are lo-fi in their garage-pop approach, but high fidelity isn't essential when you can round off songs so succinctly. At times they employ the basic chord structures and slacker pace of Pavement, focussing on the purity of the melody. At others, they lose themselves in the groove, knocking out energetic garage-rock jams. A hugely entertaining live band in the Amsterdam scene, they're now learning to commit their raw pop harmonies and sense of fun to tape.

NORWAY: Eardrums
Drivan - Hart i Ogat
This month's Norwegian MAP artist may as well be called a Nordic band because half of them are Swedes and the other two are from Finland and Norway. The Norwegian member is Kim Hiorthoy, well known as an electronic musician, graphic designer, illustrator, filmmaker and writer. Unlike his other recordings, Drivan's debut Disko is mostly acoustic and has a very organic sound. It's very much a pop record, but a weird and wonderful one, full of field recordings, strange lo-fi sounds and partial conversations. The vocals are sung in Swedish by Lisa Ostberg, Louise Peterhoff and Kristiina Viiala, who also have taken part in composing the songs together with Hiorthoy. Disko is released on Smalltown Supersound.

PERU: SoTB
Pastizal - Apoxon You
Pastizal are an innovative band that almost came out of nowhere. Based in Lima, their music comfortably delves into psychedelia, shoegaze and experimental beats, but essentially rock is at its core. Apoxon You was first included in a free compilation released by Peruvian label Dorog Records.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
Triplet - Like It's Going Out Of Fashion
The band Triplet have been around for eight years and have played all over Europe, but they only released their debut album, A Fight For Your Heart, in 2007. Their new EP, Noise, Noise, Noise, is being distributed freely here. Even though they are called Triplet they have four members – vocalist Jasmin Jones was our guest in February's MAP with her solo record.

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise
Alternativ Quartet - Insemnari La Intamplare
This month, for the first time, we have a band singing in Romanian. Alternativ Quartet are rather new on the Romanian scene: four young men from a small town - now living, studying and making music in Cluj. They are about to release their debut album, Linistea Astupa Goluri, which is a combination of experimental, post-rock, prog and other styles perfectly mixed. They sing about dreams and monsters, revelations and silence.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
Endor - Chapel Doors
Modern technology has made it easier than ever before to make and distribute music. This is most definitely a bad thing. The deserving are being drowned out by a tidal wave of bands and bedroom musicians, and the din of mediocrity is deafening. One of this year's finest albums came out in July and I never even saw it coming. At times it sounds like the missing link between Pavement and REM. It is engrossing, unpretentious and displays a real understanding of how to write a song that people will actually want to hear more than once. The band is Endor, the album is called Endor, and you can buy it here.

SINGAPORE: I'm Waking Up To...
Lunarin - Zero Point Red
Lunarin sound bigger than what you would expect for a three-piece band. They've played music for almost 15 years together, although they've only ventured down the path of a grungier, more progressive metal sound in the last five or so years. The culmination of all this is the brazenly self-recorded and produced Duae, which sees them embracing the path they've carved for themselves, with their influences of Tool, A Perfect Circle and Tori Amos firmly etched on their sleeves, like tattoos burned into skin. Lunarin take a familiar sound from the late 90s and with blistering conviction, spit a Molotov of poetic metaphors and bone-crushing riffs, all laced with Linda's "love 'em or leave 'em" vocals to slow crush your skull with.

SOUTH AFRICA: Musical Mover & Shaker!
Dance, You're On Fire - Little War
Dance, You're On Fire make music "for the love of music as a form of art". Their sound is a smooth slice of indie progressive rock mixed in with a slight alternative edge. Their single, Little War, off their new album, shows their ability to write rock songs with catchy hooks and also showcases a new, more polished sound that they have cultivated since the release of their EP. Dance, You're On Fire have all that is needed to succeed - with a catchy name and an even catchier sound, they are certainly a band to keep an eye on.

SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK
The Quip - Custard Pie
The five members of The Quip may all be a little heavy on the drinking, but that hasn't kept them from making some really good music. Their self-released debut EP Almost The Same offers plenty of variety with a psychedelic-grunge-experimental sound base. It came out this summer and was mixed and mastered by Apollo 18 bassist Jelly Boy. With the sound of a djembe setting a haunting mood, Custard Pie is an addictive, largely slow-paced tune with a finale that sees all of the band's rock energy unleashed.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease
Ed Greene - Love (She Tells Me There's A God Above)
I'm a big fan of the band Ed Greene. In fact, if you were to twist my arm I might say they're the best unsigned band in Sweden. At one time Ed Greene used to be a solo outfit but of late the band has been filled in and fleshed out. They readily admit a history of missteps and false starts but now they're back with an album of 11 new songs. Love (She Tells Me There's A God Above) may be one of the catchiest but there are presumably more where this came from.

SWITZERLAND: 78s
Choo Choo - It's A Good Thing
Choo Choo is steam-powered indie-pop from Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The band has just released new track It's A Good Thing from their forthcoming as-yet untitled record which will be released in January. They recorded it in the Svenska Grammofon Studion together with producer Kalle Gustafsson (Jose Gonzalez, Junip, Shout Out Louds, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, El Perro Del Mar, Mando Diao, Jens Lekman and many more). Definitely a big promise for 2011.

UNITED STATES: I Guess I'm Floating
Marnie Stern - Transparency Is The New Mystery
Marnie Stern hails from New York City and is a thirty-something female rocker with guitar chops and stellar songwriting skills. After the success of her 2008 release This Is It, I wondered how Stern would build upon it, but her upcoming self-titled LP looks to be just as solid. New single Transparency Is The New Mystery is an awesome jam, from heart-pounding drums and shrilling vocals to the shreddable guitar - Stern's doing edgy rock and roll right.

VENEZUELA: Barquisimento
Kuartzo - No Estas Aqui
Kuartzo is a band from Barquisimeto that started in 1998 playing mostly covers. In 2000, they ventured into writing their own material and recorded Cabalgando Mariposas, their first CD. They put their previous music experiences in the mix, developing the band's original sound of refreshing rock ballads. They are now working on their third album, Victima de la Moda ("Fashion Victim"), from which this song, No Estas Aqui, is taken.
