Silver Scroll Awards 2010

The APRA Silver Scrolls are New Zealand's annual songwriting awards. APRA is an organisation of songwriters and each year it's members nominate and vote on the songs that they believe to be the best songs of the year. The ceremony itself is an annual highlight. Each of the nominated songs is performed by another musical act, leading to some unique and surprising interpretations.

This year the five finalists were:

  • Anika Moa - Running Through The Fire (Storm)
  • Julia Deans - New Dialogue
  • The Mint Chicks - Say Goodbye
  • Artisan Guns - Autumn
  • The Naked and Famous - Young Blood

Counting The Beat was at the awards ceremony to talk to the finalists and, being a bit of a fan of a good cover version, to check out the performances.

Music Alliance Pact September 2010

This month marks twenty two months of Counting The Beat contributions to an exciting international initiative, the Music Alliance Pact. On a monthly basis music bloggers from around the globe select a track from their own country which is then posted collectively and simultaneously on those blogs - giving each nation's track international exposure. There are now 35 countries participating and interest is growing. This month Counting The Beat is pleased to be contributing 'Fifteen Golden Balls Pt. 2', by Sharpie Crows. The band has two EPs, Mass Grave and Golf Course, available on their bandcamp page form just $5 a piece. There's also clips for a couple of the band's earlier tracks on the video page.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
Sharpie Crows - Fifteen Golden Balls Pt.2
Thumping drums provide the foundation for this fantastic song that starts with the drums, vocals and keyboard before going instrumental, adding post-punk guitar chords and then, remarkably, at around the two-thirds mark, brass (or at least brass samples). The song is so well constructed I keep coming back to it to just listen to how they put it together. Sharpie Crows, from Wellington but currently living in Australia, have two EPs available on their Bandcamp.

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie
Mompox - Feel Alright
This is one of our favorite tracks from Mompox's debut album, Mompox & The Big Umbrella. The recording process took almost two years and if you listen to the album it's easy to understand why - it contains 16 songs with more than 30 musicians playing all kinds of instruments. The sound is a mixture of American pop from the 50s, with a bit of psychedelic rock and experimental sounds. It's a very eclectic record, so start with Feel Alright and then visit their MySpace for more songs if you like them.

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
Fishing - OOOO
For a pair of low-key beat-makers from Sydney, Fishing have seen an impressive ascent from small Tumblrs through to Pitchfork's Playlist with barely an official release behind them. Without wanting to reduce them to a fad, Fishing capitalise on the chillwave trend and infuse their summery vibe with an heavy dose of limping glitch-hop. Heard it before? You may have heard something similar, but Fishing really do have the skills that leave the other bros with their blunts and laptops in the dust.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Neon Night Riders - South Travelling
Echoes from bands such as M83, Arab Strap and The Jesus And Mary Chain can be felt in South Travelling by duo Neon Night Riders. The song infuses the synthpop, Britpop and shoegaze influences that are the hallmark of their work. Their first full-length, The Neon Album, is available to download at the band's Last.fm page.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music
The Love Machine - Be A Path
Once upon a time (that is, their first two EPs), The Love Machine were a fairly generic emo-pop band, albeit one that knew how to bring it live. With the release of their first full-length, Sweater Weather, however, TLM have transformed. They're still a great live band but, for the first time, they're equally great on record. This song captures that growth as well as anything. It's dark, heavy and, best of all, impossible to forget.

CHILE: Super 45
Denver - Lo Que Quieras
With straightforward pop their main goal, the songs of Denver - comprising Mariana Montenegro and Milton Mahan - evoke the sound of bands such as Abba, Electric Light Orchestra and those from the golden years of Motown Records. Their new single, Lo Que Quieras ("What You Want"), is one of the finest songs of the year. It is full of youthful promises and an epic mixture of string arrangements and sweet choirs.

CHINA: Wooozy
The Fallacy - As I Leave
Up-and-coming post-punk rockers The Fallacy have a unique blend of grungy badassness, noise and harmony that puts them right at the crest of China's post-punk wave, in which PK-14 and Re-tros have already gained a serious fanbase, both local and worldwide. Formed just two years ago in Xinjiang, Henan Province, their songs have a distinctly quelled energy brewing under a thin quilt of funk, punk, nefarious riffs and crooning vocals that are sure to secure many fans from all sorts of musical preferences.

COLOMBIA: Colombia Urbana
Profetas - Baila
Profetas is duo Antombo and Pablo, and new single Baila is a good representation of their fusion sound, which takes in some elements of indie-pop.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
Plok - Kleenex Exposition
Following three EPs, Danish math-rock (or, as they call it, mathbeat synthpunk) quartet Plok finally have a full-length debut out titled Sing Us Yr Guillotine Gospel. Through 12 mind-bending trips to places at least one step beyond, they stick it to the Man and the numbed masses. Exclusively for the Music Alliance Pact here's the awesome Kleenex Exposition.

ESTONIA: Popop
Iiris - Astronaut
Iiris is a young singer-songwriter with ambitious dreams. At the moment she is crafting her debut album with mad scientist, producer and co-writer Sethh. Aspiring to create something special, they have ventured into a secret dimension where pop, rock, innovation, synthesizers, classical piano, electronic soundscapes, catchy melodies, random madness, senseless beauty, zombies, cats and unicorns all become one.

FINLAND: Glue
Hi-Horse - 7th Street Ninjas
The sound of Hi-Horse is mostly based on the modern blues guitar of Jani Kamppi, but the band opens up its sound to the most surprising, and danceable, arrangements and textures. Their soon-to-be-released album, Concrete Clouds, is full of imaginative guitar-based pop tunes.

FRANCE: ZikNation
Smooth - Music
When listening to Smooth's music you get the strange impression of finding an old friend, a road companion, because their music draws on our own imagination where it moulds itself, each day, each rainy season, with pleasure or ecstasy. The trio borrows and mixes sounds and rhythms from their forefathers, displayed and put back together with inventiveness, jubilation and sensuality.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
Tuo - Walk With Me
It's quite uncommon to see two 16-year-old girls making folk music as relaxed as Tuo do. Tasmin and Oda create soundscapes with soft voices and two acoustic guitars which make you feel like walking barefoot on mossy ground. Walk With Me is a MAP exclusive from their debut album Walk On Silence, recently released on aspiring FlowerStreet Records.

GREECE: Mouxlaloulouda
Chris Nemmo - Half Human (feat. Etten)
After experimenting with different electronic dance genres and releasing material in several record labels worldwide, Chris Nemmo has just brought out his sophomore album, The Nautilus Project. It consists of several different aspects of the scene, employing dirty funky basslines, vintage melodies and atmospheric vocals in an effort to simulate a warm analog perception of the disco groove and aesthetics. This is Etten's second collaboration with Chris and she again provides a unique touch. Much of Half Human's seductive allure is owed to her lyrics and passionate vocal performance, which is as technically stunning as it is expressive.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
Barujarn - Skuggasorf
The band Barujarn, Icelandic for "corrugated iron", started in the fall of 2008. They play gloomy surf garage rock flavoured with metal or disco. The band members are Oddur on bass, Sindri on guitar, Leifur on drums, and Hekla on theremin. Barujarn has recorded an EP that features the song Skuggasorf and will record a full album soon.

INDIA: Indiecision
Rosemary - Golden Trees
Rosemary is a three-piece post-grunge band from Mumbai. This young act has been making waves in the Indian indie scene over the past couple of years on the back of some major competition victories and regular gigging. Golden Trees is the product of post-Nirvana youthful exuberance. Distortion heavy and moshpit ready, this four-and-a-half minute track is an ode to Seattle '90s. Listen loud.

INDONESIA: Deathrockstar
Komunal - Pasukan Perang Dari Rawa
Pasukan Perang Dari Rawa means "combat troops from the swamp". With heavy distortion, pre-historic barbaric drums stomping, deadly bass, deep vocals and a good attitude they're currently my favorite stoner band.

IRELAND: Nialler9
Groom - A Music Lesson
Groom's finest hour (well 50 minutes) arrived this month in the form of their third album Marriage. It's a slightly sardonic examination of relationships and life set to an earnest indie-pop backing. It's lovely stuff and only five euros from their Bandcamp site where you can also stream it. Go pop!

ISRAEL: Metal Israel
GodWrath - Heart vs. Mind
Vocalists using scream techniques are a dime a dozen but Godwrath boasts a female screamer with more cojones than most of the guys out there, topping their aggressive metal groove with a hardcore edge.

ITALY: Polaroid
A Classic Education - Gone To Sea
A Classic Education recently described their sound as "night music for lazy afternoons", but I think there's more to it than that. Dreamy and strong at the same time, vibrant and uplifting, Gone To Sea is a lush pop gem, a perfect example of their amazing songwriting skills. It's taken from their new Hey There Stranger EP, out this month on US label Lefse Records (Neon Indian, Dominant Legs).

JAPAN: JPOP Lover
World's End Girlfriend - Les Enfants du Paradis
World's End Girlfriend is the orchestral post-rock and experimental electronica project of Katsuhiko Maeda. He has just launched his own label, Virgin Babylon Records, and released an irregular pop album, Seven Idiots, on September 14.

MEXICO: Red Bull PanameriKa
Chikita Violenta - Roni
This is the story of a Mexican band flirting with a Canadian sound. On their second album The Stars And Suns Sessions (2007), the four-piece settled for some months in a studio on the countryside outside Toronto to make a record guided by Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene). For their third album TRE3S (2010), Chikita Violenta went back to Ontario to explore deeper into that particular sound reigning on the Arts & Crafts label: a maple leaf wall of sound vined with many layers of guitars, bittersweet-abstract choirs and a happy-go-lucky vibe.

NETHERLANDS: Unfold Amsterdam
Apneu - Daydream
Apneu are lo-fi in their garage-pop approach, but high fidelity isn't essential when you can round off songs so succinctly. At times they employ the basic chord structures and slacker pace of Pavement, focussing on the purity of the melody. At others, they lose themselves in the groove, knocking out energetic garage-rock jams. A hugely entertaining live band in the Amsterdam scene, they're now learning to commit their raw pop harmonies and sense of fun to tape.

NORWAY: Eardrums
Drivan - Hart i Ogat
This month's Norwegian MAP artist may as well be called a Nordic band because half of them are Swedes and the other two are from Finland and Norway. The Norwegian member is Kim Hiorthoy, well known as an electronic musician, graphic designer, illustrator, filmmaker and writer. Unlike his other recordings, Drivan's debut Disko is mostly acoustic and has a very organic sound. It's very much a pop record, but a weird and wonderful one, full of field recordings, strange lo-fi sounds and partial conversations. The vocals are sung in Swedish by Lisa Ostberg, Louise Peterhoff and Kristiina Viiala, who also have taken part in composing the songs together with Hiorthoy. Disko is released on Smalltown Supersound.

PERU: SoTB
Pastizal - Apoxon You
Pastizal are an innovative band that almost came out of nowhere. Based in Lima, their music comfortably delves into psychedelia, shoegaze and experimental beats, but essentially rock is at its core. Apoxon You was first included in a free compilation released by Peruvian label Dorog Records.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
Triplet - Like It's Going Out Of Fashion
The band Triplet have been around for eight years and have played all over Europe, but they only released their debut album, A Fight For Your Heart, in 2007. Their new EP, Noise, Noise, Noise, is being distributed freely here. Even though they are called Triplet they have four members – vocalist Jasmin Jones was our guest in February's MAP with her solo record.

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise
Alternativ Quartet - Insemnari La Intamplare
This month, for the first time, we have a band singing in Romanian. Alternativ Quartet are rather new on the Romanian scene: four young men from a small town - now living, studying and making music in Cluj. They are about to release their debut album, Linistea Astupa Goluri, which is a combination of experimental, post-rock, prog and other styles perfectly mixed. They sing about dreams and monsters, revelations and silence.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
Endor - Chapel Doors
Modern technology has made it easier than ever before to make and distribute music. This is most definitely a bad thing. The deserving are being drowned out by a tidal wave of bands and bedroom musicians, and the din of mediocrity is deafening. One of this year's finest albums came out in July and I never even saw it coming. At times it sounds like the missing link between Pavement and REM. It is engrossing, unpretentious and displays a real understanding of how to write a song that people will actually want to hear more than once. The band is Endor, the album is called Endor, and you can buy it here.

SINGAPORE: I'm Waking Up To...
Lunarin - Zero Point Red
Lunarin sound bigger than what you would expect for a three-piece band. They've played music for almost 15 years together, although they've only ventured down the path of a grungier, more progressive metal sound in the last five or so years. The culmination of all this is the brazenly self-recorded and produced Duae, which sees them embracing the path they've carved for themselves, with their influences of Tool, A Perfect Circle and Tori Amos firmly etched on their sleeves, like tattoos burned into skin. Lunarin take a familiar sound from the late 90s and with blistering conviction, spit a Molotov of poetic metaphors and bone-crushing riffs, all laced with Linda's "love 'em or leave 'em" vocals to slow crush your skull with.

SOUTH AFRICA: Musical Mover & Shaker!
Dance, You're On Fire - Little War
Dance, You're On Fire make music "for the love of music as a form of art". Their sound is a smooth slice of indie progressive rock mixed in with a slight alternative edge. Their single, Little War, off their new album, shows their ability to write rock songs with catchy hooks and also showcases a new, more polished sound that they have cultivated since the release of their EP. Dance, You're On Fire have all that is needed to succeed - with a catchy name and an even catchier sound, they are certainly a band to keep an eye on.

SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK
The Quip - Custard Pie
The five members of The Quip may all be a little heavy on the drinking, but that hasn't kept them from making some really good music. Their self-released debut EP Almost The Same offers plenty of variety with a psychedelic-grunge-experimental sound base. It came out this summer and was mixed and mastered by Apollo 18 bassist Jelly Boy. With the sound of a djembe setting a haunting mood, Custard Pie is an addictive, largely slow-paced tune with a finale that sees all of the band's rock energy unleashed.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease
Ed Greene - Love (She Tells Me There's A God Above)
I'm a big fan of the band Ed Greene. In fact, if you were to twist my arm I might say they're the best unsigned band in Sweden. At one time Ed Greene used to be a solo outfit but of late the band has been filled in and fleshed out. They readily admit a history of missteps and false starts but now they're back with an album of 11 new songs. Love (She Tells Me There's A God Above) may be one of the catchiest but there are presumably more where this came from.

SWITZERLAND: 78s
Choo Choo - It's A Good Thing
Choo Choo is steam-powered indie-pop from Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The band has just released new track It's A Good Thing from their forthcoming as-yet untitled record which will be released in January. They recorded it in the Svenska Grammofon Studion together with producer Kalle Gustafsson (Jose Gonzalez, Junip, Shout Out Louds, The Soundtrack of Our Lives, El Perro Del Mar, Mando Diao, Jens Lekman and many more). Definitely a big promise for 2011.

UNITED STATES: I Guess I'm Floating
Marnie Stern - Transparency Is The New Mystery
Marnie Stern hails from New York City and is a thirty-something female rocker with guitar chops and stellar songwriting skills. After the success of her 2008 release This Is It, I wondered how Stern would build upon it, but her upcoming self-titled LP looks to be just as solid. New single Transparency Is The New Mystery is an awesome jam, from heart-pounding drums and shrilling vocals to the shreddable guitar - Stern's doing edgy rock and roll right.

This month marks twenty one months of Counting The Beat contributions to an exciting international initiative, the Music Alliance Pact. On a monthly basis music bloggers from around the globe select a track from their own country which is then posted collectively and simultaneously on those blogs - giving each nation's track international exposure. There are now 36 countries participating and interest is growing. This month Counting The Beat is pleased to be contributing 'Coriander and Heaven', the title track form an EP by Mild America. If you like this track the rest of the EP will appeal too. It's available as a pay-what-you-want download at http://mildamericaband.net/. There's also a clip of the band performing another track from the EP, 'New Prospects 1896' on the video page.

VENEZUELA: Barquisimento
Kuartzo - No Estas Aqui
Kuartzo is a band from Barquisimeto that started in 1998 playing mostly covers. In 2000, they ventured into writing their own material and recorded Cabalgando Mariposas, their first CD. They put their previous music experiences in the mix, developing the band's original sound of refreshing rock ballads. They are now working on their third album, Victima de la Moda ("Fashion Victim"), from which this song, No Estas Aqui, is taken.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
Mild America - Coriander & Heaven
The title track from an EP (available here) of songs melding pop with alt-country, the aim of the band is to create a sound which is "nostalgic and celebratory, bitter and hopeful". Coriander & Heaven perfectly encapsulates that approach with lyrics about a blue jay hitting a glass door and flapping with one wing on the ground. The arrangement goes from a slow vocal and percussion intro, bringing in mournful slide guitar, shifting to a martial beat before quietening to a whisper and then ending in a majestic squall of guitar.

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie
Hacia Dos Veranos with Alasdair MacLean - Draft Morning
Hacia Dos Veranos is one of Zonaindie's favorite bands, a four-piece instrumental psychedelic trip. This is an amazing Byrds cover from their latest album, with The Clientele frontman Alasdair MacLean as guest vocalist. The song was recently featured on Pitchfork's Forkcast section.

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
DZ - Gebbie St
Brisbane's DZ have been making waves with their killer live show for a couple of years now, but so far "that song" - the one to take them to the indie masses - has eluded them. I think it's here, and it's called Gebbie St. It's pretty massive, streamlining their raw, beat-heavy guitar jams into a tight, dance-punk number like one of the highlights off the debut albums by DFA 1979 or Liars.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Fusile - Combat Samba
Sort of a Brazilian reaction to Gogol Bordello, Fusile's debut EP Coconut Revolution is full of energy and great ska/punk songs such as Combat Samba. The EP (available here) has just four songs, but that's enough to make them one of the most impressive new Brazilian bands.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music
Gramercy Riffs - Oh Linda!
One listen to It's Heartbreak, the full-length debut from Gramercy Riffs, and you'll immediately notice that the band brings together a whole bunch of disparate elements: one moment they're crooning pre-rock'n'roll style, the next they sound like they've just stepped out of the '50s, the next they're sounding like an updated version of The Unicorns. Listen to it a few more times and you'll find they mix all those styles together extremely well. Then listen some more because you're unlikely to hear many better albums this year.

CHILE: Super 45
Marcos Meza - Danza
Marcos Meza is a pianist and composer from experimental hip hop outfit Como Asesinar A Felipes. His solo work goes in a different direction, closer to the more complex pop melodies of Ryuichi Sakamoto. His debut album, Piezas para Piano y Cuarteto de Cornos, is available for free download here and sees jazz, improvisation and contemporary chamber music share an interesting common space.

CHINA: Wooozy
Pairs - Oh Ghost
Pairs are basically a drummer, Xiao Zhong, and a guitarist, F. They are from two different places and hemispheres of the Earth. Pairs basically don't make theirs or any kind of music particularly well. Pretty much like people who have lost their talent. So it's cool if you hate them. Pairs are basically a misspelling on Paris and/or Pears. They've had nothing to do with these two objects. Pairs basically like to take their broadway smash music to various death traps, both North and South, and survived to tell the tale to deaf ears. Pairs just launched their first music video Yangpu Qu - you can check out here.

COLOMBIA: Colombia Urbana
Farina - Hasta El Final
Farina is a young talent and in her blood runs some sparks of Arabic traditions and Latin flavor. Right now she's promoting her single Hasta El Final ("To The End"), a dancehall/R&B romantic song, which is perfect for the perfect moment.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
King's Light Infantry - Home
Back in April, King's Light Infantry released their debut EP, Crops, from which this track is taken. The quintet work in guitar-driven indie-rock where the ever-famous Scandinavian melancholy, pop hooks and the strong, emotional vocal of lead singer/guitarist Mathias Slot play leading roles. Right now they're recording their first full-length record, slated for release sometime next year.

ENGLAND: The Daily Growl
Bear Driver - A Thousand Samurais
Bear Driver are a six-piece from Leeds who have only two singles under their belts, but are already turning the heads of festival organisers, labels and music fans in the UK. Current 7-inch Wolves came out last month, but this track is from their single from last year.

ESTONIA: Popop
Badass Yuki - Jacques Lacan On CSR!
Badass Yuki is the brainchild of two high-school students (Mart Avi and Paul Sild), who kill time by creating lo-fi-esque tunes. BY's soundworld is diverse and constantly changing, bouncing somewhere between post-punk, noise or just eclectic pop music with dancey rhythms. BY emerged from nowhere and won a local Soundwave band competition in 2009.

FINLAND: Glue
Pintandwefall - Doughnuts
Girl band Pintandwefall celebrated the warmest ever summer in Finland with the release of a free EP available to download on their website. Doughnuts is a delicious treat with a sugared guitar riff, punchy bass line and funny melody. Just 90 seconds of alternative rock for your coffee break.

FRANCE: ZikNation
Crocodile - Mental Home
Crocodile came about from an encounter between Jeremy, electric guitar player of Parisian rock band Louis de Lights, and Helene, singer of the mysterious electro collective Stupeflip. About 15 songs emerged from Crocodile's stomach in less than a year. Do not let yourself be deceived - behind a sweet voice and catchy melodies hides a ferocious animal whose bite will leave marks that will get under your skin.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
Hans Unstern - Paris
Catch Hans Unstern if you can. Uncommon is an able word to describe the work of this artist, who combines complex songwriting with sensitive German lyrics. He never crosses the fine line between brilliance and kitsch, maybe due to the slightly achy atmosphere he creates on the album Kratz Dich Raus from which Paris is the first single.

GREECE: Mouxlaloulouda
Musica Ficta - The Cell
Musica Ficta's music is a treasure that deserves plundering. Even if they haven't any official release, they are known for their astounding live performances. Apollo Retsos' undeniably affecting vocals soar over orchestral pop arrangements, lush strings, drums and chiming guitars. As a matter of fact, an effervescent explosion of emotion will drift out of your stereo as you are listening to this live recording of The Cell, an enchantingly theatrical, profoundly beautiful and incredibly addictive song. I'm eagerly awaiting their debut album.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
Pascal Pinon - Djoflasnaran
Teenage quartet Pascal Pinon - named after two-headed Mexican freak Pasqual Pinon - released their eponymous debut last year. An album full of simple pop-folk songs in Icelandic and English, written by Asthildur and Jofridur. At the moment, the 16-year-old girls are recording a second album to be released on Morr Music. This label will also re-release their debut album, containing this song, Djoflasnaran ("Devil's Snare"), a reference to Harry Potter.

INDIA: Indiecision
The Bicycle Days - Circles
The Bicycle Days is an alternative rock quintet from Bangalore. The band's music infuses samples and ambient guitar sounds into contemporary alternative rock. Think a slowed down, less self-involved Mute Math. Circles draws on progressive rock influences like Tool and The Mars Volta to create a submersive fluidity that's as languid as it is involving. Turn up the volume to 11, or just leave it at four and let the music create your pictures.

INDONESIA: Deathrockstar
Sarasvati - Oh I Never Know
Risa Saraswati is a new, aspiring singer-songwriter who is pursuing a solo career using her Sanskrit name, Sarasvati (???????). Such divine passion towards knowledge, art and music is conveyed through songs and lyrics. In her spiritual journey and quest for perfection, Risa shares her eternal experience of pursuing happiness with you.

IRELAND: Nialler9
Adebisi Shank - International Dreambeat
Taken from their second album This Is The Second Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank, International Dreambeat is the sound of pure rainbow rock. You can just see the confetti, the parades and crazy Japanese manga characters. Look out for the band's second album released on August 20 through Richter Collective in Ireland, BSM Records in UK and in October on Parabolica Records in Japan. Guests include Conor O'Brien from Villagers, who provides vocals on Europa, while Jape plays synths on the last track, Century City.

ISRAEL: Metal Israel
Acropolis - Divine Cycle
Acropolis is an extreme melodic metal act from Israel. They blend aggressive metal grooves with brilliantly structured songs and melodies. Their debut release, The Aftermath, became a top seller on indie distribution website CD Baby and, incidentally, was very big in Japan.

ITALY: Polaroid
Colapesce - La Guerra Fredda
For the first time I've selected a MAP song sung in Italian. I like the way it mixes our folk tradition and pop influences. La Guerra Fredda ("The Cold War") is about girls on the beaches, boys dancing and grinning, the fate on some provincial road one night, long time ago. Colapesce is a young and talented songwriter from Sicily. You can download his new EP for free here. Check out Albanopower as well, Colapesce's other band.

JAPAN: JPOP Lover
Matryoshka - Monotonous Purgatory
Matryoshka was formed in 2006 by Sen (track maker) and Calu (vocals). Their subtle yet profound strings, unreal rhythms, melancholic female vocals, cool and alluring piano mix with a hundred noises to create their massive sound.

MEXICO: Red Bull PanameriKa
Rey Pila - No. 114
Rey Pila is the new project of Diego Solorzano (Los Dynamite), who has created a homonymous album that refines his aesthetic intentions while adding some singalong choruses with mountains of synth and guitars that are so very 80s, so 'Rock en tu idioma'.

NETHERLANDS: Unfold Amsterdam
Palmbomen - Myself
Translated as "Palm Trees", Palmbomen is the Netherlands' answer to the chillwave phenomenon that's sweeping through another indie summer. Although we're still a bit antsy about a genre identifier that, at least to us, signifies a bunch of kids buying fourth-hand DX7s and deciding it's okay to like Simply Red, Palmbomen has made a hefty dent on the Amsterdam live scene in only a few months of activity. The vibe is unsurprisingly tropical from the off - throbbing bass, rumbling percussion and synth-heavy. The music isn't trapped in a languid haze, however. The melodies hook you instantly while the vocals are playful and, perhaps unexpectedly, not utterly buried in a cathedral full of reverb. Essentially, it's just great electronic pop.

NORWAY: Eardrums
Silje Nes - The Card House
When I first heard Silje Nes four years ago, I instantly fell in love with her fragile but strong music. Now she's a critically acclaimed artist on the fine FatCat label, preparing the release of her second album Opticks. Nes is one of those artists who plays around with lots of sounds and instruments, some which she can play and some she can't. The result is often stunningly beautiful - somewhere between pop and experimental - but definitely accessible and catchy. The album will be released on September 13 but her single, Crystals, is available now. The song we have for you here is a MAP exclusive from the new album. Thank you, FatCat!

PERU: SoTB
Maku - Cuantas Piedras
Maku is a project led by Michael Dawson. Talking about his debut is almost like talking about a box of surprises. Maku's music uses reggae as its base and also blends jazz and tropical sounds. Cuantas Piedras is the opening track from Maku's self-titled album, which is available to download free from here and contains 11 songs, nine of which were recorded with the help of Francois Peglau.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
Peixe : Aviao - No Jogo da Quimera
Peixe : Aviao (translated as "Fish : Airplane") are a quintet from the oldest ciy of Portugal, Braga. Their first recording was an EP, in 2008, and their Radiohead influence was already clear. In 2009, they released their first LP, which confirmed them as one of the most interesting new bands, singing in Portuguese. No Jogo da Quimera is from their 2010 record, Madrugada.

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise
Bogdan - Phase Transition
Bogdan makes the transition from experimental productions to dance music, and makes it seems like child's play. His artistic development is noticeable both in his own productions and the hallucinating club nights he manages to kick off. In June 2010, Bogdan lit the fuse for local Romanian sound with another change in style - a cosmic techno hybrid. 4/4 dancing with a disco heart, it's an album that tells a story about dancing in zero gravity. The new EP, Human Thermodynamics, can be downloaded from the Local Records website.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
Dems - Jarndyce vs Jarndyce
Dems is a truly exciting newcomer to the Scottish music scene. London-raised but Edinburgh based, Dan Moss has just two songs to his name at the time of writing and no live appearances on the horizon. What we do know is that he's a man whose talent is matched by his ideas. Jarndyce vs Jarndyce is a classy, clever and thoroughly accessible piece of electro-pop, like a more edgy Postal Service.

SINGAPORE: I'm Waking Up To...
Basement In My Loft - I Think I'll Run
Basement In My Loft have an underground, garage-rock sound with lofty melodies. As a power trio, they deftly walk the line between bittersweet melodies and utter chaos, while delivering an urgency in their music, convinced that one day, all this shall pass. They've got big things planned ahead, dropping their debut album at this year's Baybeats music festival, one of Southeast Asia's most prestigious indie festivals. Even with the accolades, BIML's belief in their music and style keeps their integrity intact, with the band taking no shortcuts to making music that matters.

SOUTH AFRICA: Musical Mover & Shaker!
Popskarr - Tonight
Popskarr's sound has been described as "deep but dancey, but new wavey, but all in all it still kinda bangs out your sound system". Their song Tonight shows off their electronic, nu-disco sound with just a splash of pop thrown in for good measure.

SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK
Kinzli & The kiloWatts - Oahu
Hailing from South Korea but now residing in London, Kinzli is currently preparing for the UK release of her second full-length album, Down Up Down, on September 6. Her music offers an eclectic mix of genres, from gypspy rhythms to jazz, and in a recent review her vocals were likened to Regina Spektor. Oahu is a warm and breezy ukulele tune where her impressive lyrical skills has her declaring true love for her favourite canoe.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease
Skatan - Teritory
Skaten is not just another random Swedish band of unknown quantity and quality. This project by Simone Andersson Wingfors has been written about on various Swedish blogs for well over a year (me here) despite the fact that the songs have only been demos on MySpace. Taken as a whole, the debut record We Are All Children With Different Titles could be called piano-pop. But if you dig deeper into each song you hear elements of more serious music, be it classical, jazz, gypsy, or circus cabaret. Territory combines many of these elements in one song. The bass is as full as you'd expect from a hip hop track, the scattershot drums pulse and ricochet, and Simone's voice will give your tweeters (and your emotions) a workout.

SWITZERLAND: 78s
We Loyal - Distant Heart
We Loyal from Basel play highly addictive dark-wave synth-pop with detours to indietronic. Their influences range from TV On The Radio to Joy Division and The Notwist. Even so, their Obstacles EP proves they are capable of more than reciting their role models.

UNITED STATES: I Guess I'm Floating
Wise Blood - STRT SRNS
Christopher Laufman aka Wise Blood makes the kind of music that might come out of a lo-fi Panda Bear & Jack White collab session. STRT SRNS is straight off his debut EP, +, which you can pick up for free at his Bandcamp page.

VENEZUELA: Barquisimento
Desorden Publico - Espiritual
Desorden Publico is one of the oldest ska bands in Venezuela. Formed in Caracas in the mid-80s, this nine-member team has been famous for their powerful live performances and has the reputation of being a solid, influent and respected icon for the genre. Their music is full of Latin vibes and honest lyrics inspired from social problems. Espiritual is taken from the Desorden LP.
